The Meaning of Transitive Verb

There are many opinions relating to definition of transitive. They are as follows:

Moris and Devies (1981: 1364) define that the word ‘transitive’ is actually derived from Latin word “transitivus” that meaning passing over (as from the subject to the object). The word “transitive” is actually an adjective, expressing an action that is carried from the subject to the object; it requires a direct object to complete the meaning.

Coulson and Little (1959: 2231) also state that the “transitive” is derived from Latin word “transitivus” that meaning passing over, and of verbs expressing an action which passes over to an object; taking a direct to complete the sense.

Marekwan, et al (1967: 1334) similarly explain that the word “transitive” stems from Latin word ”transitivus” that meaning “transit”. Transitive is an adjective, that is having, requiring or terminating upon a direct object; it is also expressing an action performed by a subject or agent that passes over to take effect on some person or thing or its object.

Frank (1972: 49) points out that a transitive takes a direct object and only transitive may be used in the passive voice.
Faidlal (2007: 120) argues that transitive is words that need or require an object or complement to complete the meaning of the sentence.

My Best Friends

When I was a little boy at summer camp, another little boy came up to me and want to play. “Be my best friend?” he asked and held out het hand. So Lukman and I shook on it and we became best friends

A few weeks later, a group of kids were playing outside, and I was walking up from behind because I’d gone to get a chocolate milk for Lukman. Lukman loved milk!

As I neared the group, I heard Lukman ask another boy “Be my best friend?” and another boy replied “I throught you were Fadli’s best friend!” Lukman said “yeah, but today I think he’s a dumb boy because he didn’t bring me chocolate milk so I want a new best friend.”

Well, there’s little six year old me, swearing I wouldn’t sad or yell at Lukman , Whom I believed to be my best friend.
So I ran away to the stream, throwing out the chocolate milk along the way. When I got there, a group of boys were killing tadpoles. I had a screaming fit at them stop and then ran to a favorite tree and cried my eyes out until past dark.

Language is a human communication tool to interact in daily life. This means that they have much time and large opportunity to study English even in university there is a special English department. Nevertheless they still find many problems to use English well. Therefore, they fell reluctant to speak English when they are joining in speaking activities, to write the sentence when they are joining in writing activities, to read the text when they take a participation in reading activities.
